The team here at Enactus SFU would like to wish our wonderful supporters and everyone that has been part of our organization a very Merry Christmas! This time of year is often seen as a time of celebrations, family, feasts and giving thanks to those around us. However, there are many individuals within our local community who are forced to live on wages that are significantly lower than the cost of living, often going hungry and being unable to afford presents for their loved ones during the holiday season. Our team got in the Christmas spirit earlier this month when our Hunger Actions program partnered with Booster Juice Central City to provide holiday gift baskets to low-income single mothers who were participating in the program.
Hunger Actions is a financial literacy and nutrition program run by several of our team members from Enactus SFU, which is dedicated to instilling nutritional knowledge and financial literacy education to low-income families across the Greater Vancouver region. This year, Hunger Actions is working with groups within the YWCA and Salvation Army. Through a workshop series and interactive cooking sessions, the program focuses on improving the nutritional health and wellness of its participants. Hunger Actions was recently selected as one of fifteen winners of the Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment grant, which will provide the program with $1,500 to increase the program’s reach and help scale up its impact.
The relationship that exists between Booster Juice Central City and Hunger Actions started last year, when Hunger Actions won Booster Juice Central City’s Redefining Success contest. The contest was an opportunity for participating student-run SFU community groups to win a $1,000 grant from Jeff Cooley and Booster Juice. Jeff has remained a supporter of the program since then, and generously donated an $80 gift basket to each of the 22 single mothers that are participating in the program, from both the YWCA and Salvation Army.
This was a great opportunity for both Enactus SFU and Booster Juice Central City to help spread the Christmas spirit and give back to the community we love. We hope you take the time this year to spend your holidays with your loved ones and give back to those around you, so that we can all have a joyful winter.
